GUY

After my forced bedrest, I did feel better. I had no idea what day it was, but the setting sun made it clear that I’d lost too many days that I didn’t have. Every minute that West was out there, he was rebuilding his trafficking ring. My only hope was that some buyer would get pissed at him and kill him. Since it wasn’t sanctioned by the bureau to get rid of him, that was my only hope at this point.

I took a quick shower and was just about to head over to the silo when I ran into Liberty, which put a minor chink in my plans. I hadn’t planned to fill her in on my next steps, whatever they may be. The more distance I kept from her, the better off I would be.

“Hey, I see you’re dressed and ready to go. What’s the plan?”

“The plan is for you to stay here while I figure out what to do next.”

“Whoa,” she said, grabbing my arm as I started to walk away. “That’s it? You’re telling me to sit on the sideline like a good little girl?”

“What exactly did you think you were going to do?”

“Help,” she said in surprise. “You know as much as I do how much I want to take down my father. Besides, you still need the name I got in Mexico.”

I ran a hand over my face, exasperated that I had forgotten about that. Nearly having my brain scrambled had really fucked with me. I needed to get her out of my life and back to my own routine, one in which she wasn’t around to fuck with my head.

Luckily, Johnny and Jason were striding toward me from across the property. “Johnny!” I shouted, snagging his attention. They both walked over to me looking wary. When they reached me, I turned to Johnny. “I need you to work with Libby for a while in the ring. I need to speak with Jason.”

“Right.”

Like the good soldier he was, he stepped forward and grabbed Libby by the elbow.

“No, that’s not fair. You’re not doing this to me!” Libby shouted.

I ignored her and let Johnny drag her away kicking and screaming. Then I turned a hard stare on Jason. “What the fuck were you thinking?”

“What are you talking about?”

“Libby told me that you had loose lips while I was in the hospital.”

He shrugged like he didn’t care. “I told her what she needed to know.”

“I’ll decide what she does and doesn’t need to know. My personal life and however that involves her has nothing to do with you.”

“It does when you put our lives on the line as well,” he snapped back, not at all intimidated by me. This was why I liked Jack, Johnny, and Jason so much. They respected me, but they didn’t kiss my ass. “You and I both knew this would eventually come out. Your inability to control your feelings for her was bound to become a problem.”

“It’s not a problem now, and it wasn’t before.
